We will assess the potential for seaweed (macroalgae) farming to contribute to a sustainable economy and explore current and future opportunities involving emerging technologies and resources that are unique to Texas.

Goal of Symposium

We will bring together researchers and stakeholders from various fields to discuss potential economic opportunities for seaweed cultivation. Topics will include but are not restricted to:

  • strategies and opportunities for seaweed cultivation and harvesting
  • production of human food, medical and cosmetic products

  • use of seaweed for agricultural applications and environmental remediation

  • establishment of renewable biofuel and bioplastic industries based on seaweed

  • co-cultivation of seaweed with other species (e.g. bivalves, crustaceans, finfish) in commercial mariculture operations

  • integration of seaweed mariculture into traditional industries, incl. oil and gas
